Australian market evidence

Australian solar and battery statistics 2026

Twelve primary-source facts for solar retailers, writers and analysts. Every figure has its reporting period, definition and source.

Published and sources checked: 13 September 2026. Reporting periods vary; this is a dated snapshot.

What does this mean for a solar retailer?

The combined-installation figure makes battery-ready quoting a useful workflow to evaluate. It does not establish a nationwide annual conversion rate: the source flags installations brought forward before incentive changes.

Applications, approvals and completed payments belong in separate pipeline stages. Use the market figures to frame a planning discussion; use your own verified records to forecast workload and cash.

How many batteries were approved in Q2 2026?

CER reports more than 111,000 approved batteries installed during the quarter.

Period: Q2 2026 · Scope: Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Approved installations, not all applications received.

How much battery storage was installed in Q2 2026?

The quarter added 3.6 GWh of storage capacity.

Period: Q2 2026 · Scope: Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Energy capacity; do not substitute GW, a power unit.

How much small-scale solar was installed in Q2 2026?

Quarterly new small-scale solar capacity exceeded 1 GW for the first time.

Period: Q2 2026 · Scope: Australian small-scale solar

Installed power capacity, not electricity generated.

How common were combined solar and battery installations?

More than 80% of small-scale solar installations in April were installed alongside a battery.

Period: April 2026 · Scope: Australian small-scale solar installations

One month ahead of incentive changes; not an annual adoption rate.

What share of NEM generation was renewable?

Renewables supplied around 42% of NEM generation in the quarter.

Period: Q2 2026 · Scope: National Electricity Market

NEM coverage differs from all-Australia electricity statistics.

How many battery applications had the program received?

CER reported receiving more than 500,000 battery applications since the program started.

Period: August 2026 release · Scope: Cheaper Home Batteries Program, cumulative since commencement

Applications are not a count of approved or completed installations.

How much large-scale solar reached an investment decision?

Large-scale solar projects totalling 1.8 GW reached final investment decision.

Period: Q2 2026 · Scope: Australian large-scale solar

Investment decisions are not commissioned generating capacity.

How much electricity did Australia generate in 2025?

Australia generated 286.8 TWh of electricity in 2025.

Period: Calendar year 2025 · Scope: All Australian electricity generation

Includes on-grid and off-grid generation.

What share of Australian electricity came from solar?

Solar supplied 19.6% of total Australian electricity generation.

Period: Calendar year 2025 · Scope: All Australian electricity generation

Includes solar generation generally; not a rooftop-only share.

What share of Australian electricity was renewable?

Renewables supplied 39.5% of total Australian electricity generation.

Period: Calendar year 2025 · Scope: All Australian electricity generation

Do not substitute the on-grid or NEM-only percentage.

What share of on-grid electricity was renewable?

Renewables supplied 42.0% of on-grid electricity generation.

Period: Calendar year 2025 · Scope: Australian on-grid electricity generation

Excludes off-grid generation.

How much did the on-grid renewable share increase?

The on-grid renewable share rose by 3.9 percentage points from 2024 to 2025.

Period: 2024 to 2025 · Scope: Australian on-grid electricity generation

Percentage points measure the difference between shares, not relative growth.

An original calculation: why the denominator matters

For calendar 2025, the on-grid renewable share exceeds the all-generation share by 2.5 percentage points. Calculation: 42.0 − 39.5 = 2.5. This compares two coverage definitions in the same official release; it is not annual growth.

Calculated by ArcSolar from DCCEEW electricity generation statistics. Inputs are rounded, so the result inherits their precision.

Sources, methodology and reuse

ArcSolar compiled these facts from the Clean Energy Regulator and DCCEEW. We did not collect the underlying installation or generation data. The ledger preserves the publisher, period, coverage and qualification for every row. We selected statistics relevant to solar and battery retailers; this is not an exhaustive market dataset.

Link to the individual fact and its original source when citing. Attribute the calculation above to ArcSolar and the underlying figures to DCCEEW. Check the original publisher for revisions and reuse terms. We review this snapshot when the next relevant quarterly report is published; the date changes only after an actual review.
